Hand Washing Guide for Hard-Shell Jackets

Prep Work
- Empty all pockets and close zippers, snaps, and Velcro fasteners to prevent snagging the fabric or damaging the hardware.
- Brush off loose dirt, dust, or debris from the jacket surface with a soft-bristled brush (e.g., a clothes brush or old toothbrush) to avoid rubbing dirt into the fabric during washing.

Washing Solution Preparation
- Use a specialized detergent for waterproof gear . Regular laundry detergents contain surfactants that can break down the jacket’s waterproof coating (DWR, Durable Water Repellent).
- Fill a clean basin or tub with lukewarm water (maximum 30°C/86°F). Avoid hot water, as it can damage the waterproof membrane and shrink the fabric.
- Add the recommended amount of specialized detergent to the water and stir gently to dissolve it fully.

Hand Washing Process
- Submerge the hard-shell jacket in the soapy water and gently press it to ensure the fabric absorbs the solution. Do not twist, wring, or scrub the jacket vigorously—this can damage the waterproof membrane and cause the fabric to lose its structure.
- Focus on stained or heavily soiled areas (e.g., cuffs, collars) by lightly dabbing the surface with a soft cloth soaked in the soapy water. Avoid using a brush on these areas unless the detergent instructions explicitly allow it.
- Let the jacket soak for 10–15 minutes (do not soak for longer than 30 minutes, as prolonged exposure to water may affect the DWR coating).

Rinsing
- Drain the soapy water and refill the basin with clean, lukewarm water.
- Submerge the jacket again and gently press it to rinse off the detergent residue. Repeat this rinsing process 2–3 times until no soap suds appear when you press the fabric—residue left on the jacket can reduce its waterproof performance.

Drying
- Gently squeeze out excess water from the jacket (do not wring or twist). Lay the jacket flat on a clean, absorbent towel and roll the towel up with the jacket inside to absorb more moisture (this helps speed up drying without damaging the fabric).
- Unroll the towel and hang the jacket on a wide, padded hanger in a well-ventilated, shaded area. Avoid direct sunlight, heaters, or dryers—high heat can melt the waterproof membrane and destroy the DWR coating.
- Once the jacket is completely dry, you can restore the DWR coating (if needed) by following the instructions on a specialized DWR refresher spray .

Post-Washing Care
- Store the dry hard-shell jacket in a loose, breathable garment bag (not a sealed plastic bag) to allow air circulation and prevent mildew.
- Avoid folding the jacket for long periods (e.g., in a backpack) if possible—hanging it helps maintain the fabric’s shape and prevents creases that could weaken the waterproof layer.
